A BBQ place that’s close to our house?? Woohoo!! We had to check it out! A new restaurant.com coupon showed up and we were there in no time!
What we ordered: Luau Sampler: Feeds 3 people. Includes: Kalua pig – Grilled huli huli chicken – Pork ribs – Grilled beef tri-tip – Smoked sausage - rice – Macaroni salad - Island slaw – Paniolo beans
How we ordered it: Substituted Mac Salad and Beans for Tropical Fruit and Steamed Vegetables. No rice please!
What we got:
Cost: Luau Platter – $28
Quality: Wow, this meat was good! The brisket, ribs and chicken were all tasty and moist and flavorful. The sausages were just typical sausages. But it was a good combo of lean and fat meats. The Sides however, were a different story. Clearly this place is a meat place which is awesome! The steamed vegetables were nothing great. They looked and tasted like they were from a bag. The Tropical Fruit was definitely out of a can. Island slaw was nothing great….at least it didn’t have mayo in it! Booo, but the meat was pretty awesome!
Quantity: That platter had a ton of meat! Both of us could not finish all of it.
MEAT-O-METER
The meat was good, but the restaurant itself was tiny and awkward. There were only 4 tables, one consisting of a long and narrow table that faced the other three tables, not facing a window or anything. Very awkwardly spaced. The summer may be a bit better because there is outdoor seating. Regarding the food, however, the meat was pretty good, but the sides were terrible. I know this review is supposed to be about the meat, but I couldn’t NOT take in consideration everything else to give it a really good review…..It’s a give and take. Not our favorite place. If we wanted good barbecue we’d probably drive to Podnah’s.

This restaurant is so close by, it’s a wonder why it took me so long to get post this! Sorry for those patiently anticipating….but if you don’t know our favorite rib joint by now, you’re out of the loop and Russell’s not it.
What we ordered: Meat-a-palooza Platter! (Comes with your choice of 3 meats, I chose brisket, pulled pork and a sausage link), The Half rack of Baby Back Pork Rib Platter.
How we ordered it: Each platter comes with two sides. Your choice of mac’n cheese, cole slaw, greens, fries, barbecue beans, candied yams, potatoe salad and house tossed salad. We of course went with the greens and the candied yams.
What we got:

MEAT-a-palooza Platter

Ribs Special
Cost: Half rack of baby back ribs – $13.50, Meat-a-palooza Platter – $16.00
Quantity: The amount of meat you get is moderate. With the Meat-a-Palooza, I was expecting 3 ginormous plates or something. With a name like that, I was definitely disappointed. Those with large appetites may leave hungry. It’s no Podnah’s Tuesday Rib special, but it’s a tasty meal.
Quality: The meat is great! It is tasty, falls-off-the-bone delicious and moist.

Oh no! Our rib restaurant alternate has shut down, unfortunately. I’m glad we got a taste while it lasted!

Elnetta’s was a new restaurant posting on restaurant.com! This restaurant is located in the old Vita Cafe building. (Vita Cafe moved across the street). We had to try this place, especially since their menu included ribs. Having already found a favorite rib place, Podnah’s, we didn’t have very high expectations. Having a coupon and the fact that this place was a family owned business, we figure it was worth a try. Good thing we were pleasantly surprised…
What we ordered: Slab of St. Louis Ribs!
How we ordered it: Ribs with a side of Cabbage greens.
What we got:

Complementary homemade bean salsa w/ chips (non-paleo).

RIBS!

Side o' greens

Don't forget the sauce!
Cost: Slab of St. Louis Ribs – $16, Side of Cabbage Greens – $3.00
Quantity: Elnetta’s rib amount comes very very close to Podnah’s. Friends joined us for dinner later and ordered the same thing and their pate of ribs had a second tier! Ah welll, not sure what happened there, but regardless, both serving sizes were plentiful!
Quality: Fantastic! I’m not sure what the difference between St. Louis Ribs and Texas Ribs and the millions of other types of ribs out there, but these were some tasty pieces of meat!
MEAT-O-METER says!
We figure considering the amount of ribs you get at Podnah’s for $20, Elnetta’s comes very close. This place is great, it’s unique, in a great location and great food. We definitely highly recommend this place if Podnah’s runs out of ribs. With the $25 coupon from restaurant.com, it’s even better.

Food cart on the corner of SE 12th St. and Hawthorne
Lookng for late night eats? There’s a small parking lot across from the Shell Gas station and diagonal from Burgerville, near SE 12th and Hawthorne. This parking area is now filled with food carts, it’s like a late night eats food cartfest on the SE side of town. We’ve been complaining how there’s no place to eat in this town after 10 pm except for Ihop, Denny’s or some other carb infested breakfast restaurant. When my co-worker told me about a BBQ food cart being open until 4 am, I really thought he was pulling my leg.
What we ordered: BBQ chicken, Brisket.
How we ordered it: Just the meat please, no bread.
What we got:

BBQ Chicken and Brisket
Cost: BBQ Chicken – $4.75, Brisket – $4.75
Quality: Delicious, nutritious and gosh darn tasty. If you can remember, tell them to hold off on the barbecue sauce. There’s a lot of sugar in the bbq sauce and they are pretty generous with it.
Quantity: For the price, it was a great deal.
MEAT-O-METER Says?

This was a great find! Late night (after 10 pm) the parking lot had about 5 different food carts. As for the Paleo friendly food cart, Q BBQ was the best option. People were steadily coming in and out. I’m sure it’s hopping at 2 am! During the summer this place will be packed! Remember to bring your cash!

Texas Style Barbecue! It doesn’t get much better than this! Rodney, a member of Crossfit Portland, is the owner. Say hello when you see him!
Another night of ourselves asking each other, “Where should we eat for dinner?”. First we usually check out Happy Hours in the area on www.urbandrinks.com. (Great website!) They tell you what happy hours are going on right now! Podnah’s appeared! On Tuesday’s, it’s ALL DAY RIBS special and Beer Happy hour!
This place is now our Tuesday ritual! Come join us!
What we ordered: FULL RACK of RIBS
How we ordered: Ribs and water.
What we got: Have ever seen such a thing? Wow….

Cost: $20
Quality: Very tasty and moist. The ribs are made with no sugar! If choose to use the condiments, the tasty vinegar mix has some sugar as well as the special bbq sauce that contains some ketchup. The meat was cooked perfectly, it was falling off the bone!
Quantity: Wow…refer to above pic.
MEAT-O-METER says!
Yes, what appears to be a rib has taken the place of the second thumb. To further accentuate this positive rating, the rib was used instead. Tuesdays is the greatest day of the week now. We’ll probably be there every week! 20 bones for 12 ribs! If you are alone and you don’t want to order all 12, they sell them for $1.75 each. Though the entire rack is a way better deal and well worth it! Regular price is $32 for the whole rack. Yay! This is a great Paleo friendly option. When we were there, they did run out of ribs. We got there just in time and didn’t have to wait for a table. If you go, go soon cuz word will catch on about this ridiculously fantastical rib deal and your wait for a table could become much longer!

Parking lot of New Seasons on 33rd and Killingsworth.
There is a new coupon on Restaurant.com for Cannon’s, so we had to go there! (If you missed the blog post about restaurant.com, let me recap: Restaurant.com sells $25 gift certificates for $10. www.slickdeals.net posts Promo Codes for restaurant.com. The promo codes give you anywhere from 60 – 80% off the price of the gift certificate. We never buy a gift certificate at full price! So it makes your meal even cheaper!)
OK, back to Cannon’s….
What we ordered: Half pound of brisket, Full rack of ribs, 2 corn on the cobs
How we ordered it: No barbecue sauce please! There’s a lot of sugar on the sauce and they load it up on the ribs and brisket.
What we got:
Cost: Rack of pork ribs – $23, Brisket – $10 for half pound, Corn – $1 each
Quality: Ribs were a little dry. Even though we said to hold the barbecue sauce, doesn’t mean it still shouldn’t be dry….Brisket was spectacular. Moist and tasty.
Quantity: OK, half pound of brisket really was not as much as we had hoped, but the quality was pretty good. Ribs were really just OK, not as good as Podnah’s. They did keep the rib tips on the ribs which definitely added to the meat amount.
Meat-O-Meter says!
(picture was not taken at Cannon’s) Definitely not the best in Portland. It was just OK. For the price and the amount, it’s right smack in the middle. RIbs were definitely a bit disappointing. But there’s a new Special price on the Bucket of Rib Tips – $18. Though because this is a special, it doesn’t work with the restaurant.com coupon, it’s not a bad deal by itself. In general though barbecue places are great for any Paleo needs. All meat all the time, with no need for substitutions, usually, it’s great if you’re in a bind and not sure what to eat for the protein part of your meal.
